PSA 306 Move

I have been informed by MPD Chief Cathy Lanier of her plans to act soon to move PSA 306 to the second police district on September 2. While all of PSA 306 is in Ward Two, there are obvious impacts since it borders U Street and 14th Street on Ward One.

I am concerned by such a significant change without comprehensive community input from Ward One, which shares boundaries with two significant business corridors. There is not an ANC resolution in Ward One to support this change and there is significant opposition from local businesses on U St, who are concerned about breaking up a significant business corridor.

I also lack assurances concerning the impact on deployment in what are already neighborhoods underserved by the MPD.

While the Chief and I share the same goals--solve crimes quickly and ensure the safety of her officers--I am not convinced moving PSA 306 is the way to accomplish this.

I remain supportive of Chief Lanier and have enjoyed a positive personal and professional relationship with her.

I call upon the Chief, therefore, to hold at least one Community Forum in Ward One before the implementation of this plan. Regardless, I will convene the meeting with her in mid September.

Board of Education Results

Congratulations to Mary Lord, the newest member of the DC State Board of Education! She won the special election with an outstanding 79% of the vote! She will now represent Wards 1 and 2 as the District 1 representative.

Please see the letter she sent me this morning.

Dear Jim,

I don't know how to thank you and your superb staff for helping to propel me into the winner's circle last week.

Without your encouragement, support--and early endorsement, I might not have thrown my hat in the ring, let alone wound up as the only name on the ballot.

Still, credit for Tuesday's victory goes in large degree to the efforts of your two fabulous staff members, Calvin Woodland and Jason Yuckenberg. Turnout would have been a lot lighter had they not worked their last-minute magic -- sending out reminders on the neighborhood list-serves and making the rounds of the Ward 1 precincts, etc. I learned first hand how much weight Jim Graham's name carries--as well it should!--when voters not only recognized me as the candidate you endorsed, but got on their cell phones to urge their partners and friends to go VOTE.

So, thank you one and all for a job VERY well done. I look forward to working with you and building the world-class public education system our communities and kids deserve.

District 1 member-elect, DC State Board of Education

Mrs. Willie J. Hardy

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs. Willie J. Hardy. Mrs Hardy's remarkable service was instrumental to the development of the District of Columbia home rule government. She was the first elected Councilmember from Ward 7 under the Home Rule Act and was a well known activist. Her personal strength, character, passion, and determination were truly inspirational.

Board of Education Election

The school board election is tomorrow, Aug. 21, so please take some time to go to the polls.

The board has important new state-level responsibilities, including approving standards for such essentials as art and foreign languages. The higher the turnout tomorrow, the more effectively our elected member can speak.
