On Saturday I joined Joel Bernger, one of our Ward 1 artists, for the unveiling of his new mural in the 1300 block of U Street.
Joel wanted to depict the culture and struggle of Afro-Colombians, many of whom have assylum in the District and elsewhere in the country. Joel created the design for the mural with the help of many of his Afro-Colombian friends. He even spent time in Colombia visiting their families to get a better understanding of the issues they face.
I'm happy to have this new mural in our Ward 1, which as you may know is the most diverse in the city and is home to most of the District's Latinos.
I thank Joel for his hard work on this project and I thank the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities for making this possible through a grant.
