Scholarships

The 2007 Jim Graham Scholarships


Councilmember Graham awards a Jim Graham Scholarship to a Ward One, college-bound graduating senior from each high school in the ward. Scholarships honor students who have outstanding academic achievements and strong community service.

Five Ward One students received $500 Jim Graham Scholarships in 2007.


Cindy Flores
Bell Multicultural High School

Cindy plans to attend Marymount University.  Cindy has been on the Honor Roll for three years and has performed three years of volunteer work with Brain Food, a non-profit culinary arts program that teaches young people culinary and marketing skills.  Cindy also completed an intensive summer internship with the Federal Trade Commission and received a letter of recommendation from the Deputy Director citing her “highly satisfactory work.”.


Diona Marie Hatton
Benjamin Banneker Academic High School

Diona has been accepted by Cheyney University of Pennsylvania and plans to study pediatrics.  She has received numerous awards and honors during her four years at Banneker, including National Honor Roll, Who’s Who Among High School Students Honor Society and DC Science and Technology Fair for Medicine and Health.  She wants to travel and put her knowledge and skills to end the disparity in health care and poverty in developing countries.

Devon Bynum
Booker T. Washington Public Charter School for Technical Arts

Devon plans to attend Tuskegee University.  He served on the Spirit Week Planning Committee and Student Council and has been recognized for two years on the National Honor Society.  Devon has volunteered with the Humane Society, loves animals, and plans to major in veterinarian science.

Helene Traore
Francis L. Cardozo Senior High School

Helene plans to attend the University of the District of Columbia.  She has received academic awards for public speaking, English, Psychology, and Social Studies.  Helen is an intern at the DC Department of Transportation, was Vice President of the African/ Caribbean Club, and was a student intern for two years at Covington – Burling Law Firm and the Saturday Academy Program.


Tanisha Bennett
Maya Angelou Public Charter School

Tanisha plans to attend the University of Maryland – Eastern Shore.  She was a participant in the City-Wide Debate Team and worked as a receptionist at the Department of Public Works.  She was on the honor roll, had perfect attendance, and was voted as the Most Improved Student.  She plans to major in Criminal Justice / Sociology or English.
