- Health Insurance: Authored legislation, which was unanimously passed by the Council that requires health insurance coverage for children with birth defects such as autism and cerebral palsy.
- Health Insurance: Expanded the number of clinics, including two in Ward One that can take part in the District’s free clinic liability insurance coverage for medical providers. Physician assistants are also covered.
- Emergency Response: Introduced legislation to require all basic EMTs be trained to administer EpiPens and all basic life-support vehicles carry the devise. The EpiPen is a spring-loaded syringe with a single dose of epinephrine, a drug that temporarily opens the lungs in the case of anaphylactic shock. The pens are prescribed to people with severe allergies.
- Elevator Safety: Held public oversight hearings to increase elevator safety.
- Smoking Ban: Supported a smoking ban in District bars and restaurants to promote public health.
- Hospitals: Fought to support new hospitals whose core missions include care for uninsured and underinsured residents.
- Drugs & Alcohol: Co-introduced legislation to give residents free access to immediate treatment for drug addiction and alcoholism.
- Emergency Response: Encouraged corporate organizations and health clubs to have automated external defibrillators (AEDs) on hand in case of sudden cardiac arrest, which kills more than 340,000 Americans a year.
- Lead Paint Prevention: Advocated childhood lead paint poisoning prevention.
- Hospitals: Opposed closing of DC General Hospital.
- Contraceptives: Supported legislative attempts to require private insurance carriers to include contraceptive coverage.
