Do you know what to do if there is an illegally parked car after hours?

Residents should call 3-1-1 if there is an illegally parked car after 9:30pm. Either MPD or DPW will come out to issue the ticket. If a tow is required, the Police Officer or Parking Officer will call the Towing Control Center at DPW. The dispatcher will then call a private tow company for the tow.

The tow companies know that it is illegal to tow a vehicle without the vehicle owner's consent. The exception is when MPD or DPW authorize the tow.

Typically most of the after hours tows involve vehicles that are in accidents or breakdowns. Occasionally, the tows are for illegally parked vehicles.
