District Redirects Budget Surplus to Increase Affordable Housing

Location

John A. Wilson Building
1350 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W
20004 Washington, DC

Today marked another great day in the city as Mayor Vincent Gray signed the Fiscal Year 2013 Revised Budget Request Emergency Adjustment Act 2013 at the John A. Wilson Building. This act will redirect funds from the District's surplus to support the supply of affordable housing. As I have stated continually, an effective way to end and prevent homelessness is through the availability of affordable housing. This level of support from the Mayor is timely, and I am elated to announce this news.

Get Well Tribute for Angel Luis Irene

May 19, 2013, I was invited to attend a Get Well Tribute for an extraordinary man, Angel Luis Irene. Mr. Irene was born in Puerto Rico and came to the United States as a young adult to the District of Columbia, and received an undergraduate degree in Political Science and Economics from the University of Puerto Rico, and a Masters Degree in Government from Georgetown University.

Local Bus Drivers Protest the Upcoming 40% Pay Cut

Today I listened directly to the concerns from members of Local 1959, and District Council 20 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). As of Thursday, May 16, 2013, employees were informed that hours would be decreased along with 40% of their current pay. This is unfortunate news, and as promised to the members in attendance, they have my full support to have hours and pay returned.

Members of SHARC (Shelter, Housing and Respectful Change) Voice Concerns

Members of SHARC (Shelter, Housing and Respectful Change), stopped by to visit my office today to express concerns of proposed closing of the following shelters throughout the District of Columbia.  Presently, there are a total of five shelters that totals 2, 200 beds that are placed in jeopardy.  The group has acknowledged my on going efforts, and I will continue working tirelessly to advocate for additional funding and resources for District residents.
