DDOT to Begin Streetscape and Pedestrian Improvements at Adams Mill and 18th Street, NW
One of Five High-Accident Intersections to Receive Upgrades
(Washington, D.C.)-The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will begin work on the Adams Mill Streetscape and Pedestrian Improvement Project on Thursday, July 10th. The six month project is expected to be completed by December 2008, weather permitting.
The scope of work includes Adams Mill Road, NW between 18th Street and Lanier Place, Columbia Road, NW between 18th Street and Euclid Street.
The traffic control plan will allow for two lanes of traffic to be maintained in both directions of 18th Street during construction. Access to the fire house, pedestrian access to businesses and local traffic will be maintained at all times during construction.
The pedestrian improvements scheduled on the north side of the intersection at 18th and Columbia Road will incorporate some of the tools and techniques advocated in the recently released draft District Pedestrian Master Plan. These include removal of the slip lane, installation of curb extensions, sidewalk widening and pavement marking and signage improvements.
The streetscape work will include resurfacing of the roadway, construction of curb and gutter, traffic signal upgrade, realignment of the roadway, streetlight upgrade to the Washington Globe streetlight, improvement to the drainage facilities, conversion of fire hydrant and landscaping.
The intersection is one of five high-accident intersections scheduled for pedestrian safety improvements and streetscape upgrades totaling $3.5M. The other intersections include 22nd Street/Q Street/Florida Avenue and Massachusetts Avenue, NW where work has already started and is approximately half way complete. Bladensburg Road and New York Avenue, NE, Southern Avenue and 13th Street, SE and Naylor Road and Southern Avenue, SE are scheduled to begin work later this year.
Work hours will be from 7am to 7pm, Monday through Friday, weather permitting. As always, DDOT reminds pedestrians and motorists to use caution when traveling through the work zone.
Additional information and construction updates will be made available on the DDOT web site at www.ddot.dc.gov. Click on Major Construction Initiatives to locate the project information.
