FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 7, 2006

Washington, DC – Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward One) has accepted an invitation to be an international monitor in El Salvador’s national legislative elections March 12. Graham’s chief of staff Ted Loza will accompany him and serve as an interpreter as well as an election monitor. The trip is funded by SANA, the Salvadoran American National Association.

“This is a great opportunity in a great country,” said Councilmember Graham. “Ward One is home to the largest concentration of Latinos in the District, and most are from El Salvador. I’m proud to represent them.”

Control of El Salvador’s national legislature is at stake in the Saturday election. El Salvador is home to approximately 6.9 million people, and is the most densely populated country on the American mainland. It has the strongest economy in Central America. Only El Salvador and California are home to more Salvadorans than the DC metropolitan area.

This will be Councilmember Graham’s second visit to El Salvador while in office.
