Washington, DC – The District’s utility subsidy program ran out of money this past April, leaving children, the elderly, and those with poor health without electricity during the hottest months of the year.
“We must protect our most vulnerable citizens,” said Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward One). “If the power is cut off during a heat wave, residents can’t run air conditioning or fans. This puts them at serious risk of hyperthermia.”
In response, Councilmember Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3) and Councilmember Graham will announce emergency protections for children and the elderly at risk of having their utility services discontinued.
“Studies have consistently shown residents are at a greater risk from extreme heat than from extreme cold,” said Councilmember Cheh. “The District already protects residents in the winter. Now we need to do the same in the summer.”
Details will be announced at a press conference tomorrow, Wednesday, June 20 at 11am on the steps of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave, NW.
