San Salvador, El Salvador – Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward One) was honored today with the key to the city of San Salvador. The Mayor and the Council of San Salvador voted unanimously to grant Councilmember Graham this distinguished honor.

“Jim has been a friend of our communities in Washington, D.C., and has worked hard for inclusions of all people, regardless of their immigration status,” said Mayor Violeta Menjivar. “Salvadorans have benefited greatly from his actions and unconditional support.”

Councilmember Graham is visiting El Salvador at the invitation of the Mayor of San Salvador to take part in the city’s August holiday celebrations. El Salvador is home to 20% of the residents in Ward One. This is the Councilmember’s third visit to the country.

“I’m humbled by this recognition,” said Councilmember Graham. “I’m proud to represent the most diverse ward of our city. The Salvadoran community is a great contributor to our neighborhoods and development.”

Councilmember Graham will work with Mayor Adrian Fenty to establish a Sister City relation between the two capital cities.

Today’s distinction is historic in nature, as the key to the city has only been presented to Presidents, Kings, Queens, Ambassadors and other high-level officials from governments around the world.
