Washington, DC: Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward One) announced today that the Adams Morgan Main Street Group won a $170,000 federal grant for the benefit of the neighborhood to improve a portion of Champlain St, in Adams Morgan.
The Adams Morgan Main Street Group is the only organization in Ward One to win an award from the Transportation Enhancements Grant Program. The funds will complement $500,000 that Councilmember Graham set aside in the District’s 2008 budget to improve the area around the Marie Reed Learning Center.
The Marie Reed Learning Center is located on Champlain St. in an area that is currently closed to traffic. DDOT plans to re-open Champlain St. one-way with restrictions during periods of school children usage. The re-opening will provide residents, taxi drivers, and business patrons better access to Florida Avenue.
“The additional funds will help improve pedestrian safety and enhance the public space when Champlain St. opens,” said Councilmember Graham.
“The ultimate vision is for area bicyclists, dog walkers, and pedestrians to collectively enjoy new landscaping and other improvements,” said Lisa Duperier, President of the Adams Morgan Main Street Group. “This will benefit both the school and the community as we move forward.”
Councilmember Graham will join members of the community Thursday, October 18 at 10:00am, for a “before and after” photo.
