Washington, DC: Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward One) will travel to Honduras and El Salvador next week to discuss best-practices to combat gang violence.
Graham will join a twelve member delegation, to include gang experts from Los Angeles, a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, and other government officials.
The delegation will spend two days in Honduras followed by two days in El Salvador. The trip is organized by the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA).
“The meetings will provide an opportunity to share best practices and implement new ideas,” said Graham.
To combat gangs in the District, Graham worked with then Chief Ramsey to create the Gang Intervention Partnership (GIP) in 2003. The partnership is now a respected and internationally recognized model for fighting crime. It is made up of community partners, neighborhood schools, public agencies, and a specialized unit within the police department.
